Alice Larse of Los Altos calls herself a late bloomer.
She took up cello in her 60's.
And last year, at 70 she started a cookie business. She'd been
baking "Alice's Stick Cookies" for about 15 years for family and friends. Every time
she did, someone would ask for the recipe for the very buttery cookies with the
wonderful toffee-like flavor that comes from the cane sugar syrup imported from England.
A former volunteer manager at a now-defunct restaurant in Palo
Alto and a former volunteer at the Allied Arts Guild in Menlo Park, Larse now runs the
cookie business with her son's girlfriend.
The cookies are available at Draeger's markets, the ten Andronico's Markets, Gene's Fine Foods in Saratoga and Pleasonton, Bianchini's Market, Deluxe
market in Aptos, Shopper's Corner in Santa Cruz, and Piazza Foods in Palo Alto.
